At Middletown High School, summer reading is required of all students. Studies indicate that summer reading has several benefits: improved reading comprehension, increased vocabulary development, and enhanced self-discipline learning skills. It also prevents regression of skills, aids preparation for the ensuing year, and helps to prepare students for future college-level study.
This year, Middletown High School will continue with selections based on readings suggested by the Common Core State Standards. These works map to the Common Core State Standards and correspond to the curriculum of the specific grade level. Works will be assessed the first full week of school. English teachers will also refer to the works during the school year. Other assessments throughout the year will draw on these works.
