Patricia W. Edwards Memorial Art Scholarship Fund- Freshman, Sophomore, and Juniors ONLY

The Rhode Island Foundation is pleased to announce that applications are now being accepted for the Patricia W. Edwards Memorial Art Scholarship Fund.

The scholarships are for further education of young Rhode Island artists. The scholarship is available for Rhode Island high school freshman, sophomore, and juniors, who wish to attend one art class at a Rhode Island institution (Rhode Island School of Design, AS220, etc.) The applicant must demonstrate artistic ability and interest in painting and/or drawing. Given in memory of Melanie (1985-2002) who was a junior at Middletown High School who was known for her warmth, friendliness, intelligence, and sportsmanship. She was a proud to be involved with sports, both at the town and high school levels. She is greatly missed by all those who knew her. The MHS Athletic Boosters Club seeks to reward graduating student athletes in the memory of Melanie, with two $500 scholarships (one each to a senior girl and boy) who best exemplify Melanie’s spirit of friendliness and good sportsmanship.

Peter D. Connerton Jr Memorial Scholarship 2024

The Peter D. Connerton Jr Memorial Fund will be offering a onetime $1,000.00 scholarship for a MHS Senior who is committed to higher education or attending a trade/technical school. Student athletes are strongly encouraged to apply, but all applicants will be considered equally. Interested students should submit a response to one of the following questions in 144 words or less.

1.) Where do you envision yourself being in ten years and how did you get there?

2.) When did you decide on what you wanted to do after graduating and what factor(s) weighed heaviest on your decision?

Additionally, please include a letter of recommendation from your guidance counselor in support of your application for the scholarship, along with a letter of acceptance to the learning institution you plan on attending.

The Robert S.H. Fye Memorial Scholarship

The Robert S.H. Fye Memorial Scholarship honors the courageous spirit of Rob Fye, Class of 2002, who was diagnosed with cancer during his freshman year at Middletown High School. For the next nine years, this scholar, artist, athlete, and devoted friend battled recurrent illness while achieving academic excellence at Middletown High and Yale University. 

In Rob's memory, a $1,500 scholarship is awarded to a graduating Middletown High School senior to help support his/her post-secondary education. In the event that more than one candidate in a given year merits the award, the Scholarship Committee may grant a $1,500 scholarship to each of the selected candidates.

Criteria for the scholarship:

1.      Graduating senior 

2.      Acceptance to a 2- or 4-year college 

3.      Evidence of high academic achievement 

4.      Completion of the Robert S.H. Fye Scholarship Application Form

Newport Gulls Collegiate Baseball Scholarship

Purpose: To honor and reward Softball and Baseball Student-Athletes graduating from High School, to encourage them to seek education or job training beyond the secondary level, and to assist them financially in their goal of continuing their education.

Award: $500.00 scholarship to the selected softball Student Athlete. $500.00 scholarship to the selected baseball Student Athlete.

The Newport Elks Lodge

***DEADLINE*** by June 21, 2024 - The Newport Elks Lodge Application

Laura A. Martins was a first generation American.  She was educated at Teachers Normal School, a teacher’s preparatory school, now known as Rhode Island College.  She had a long career teaching in Middletown from 1917-1943 teaching in the Wyatt and Berkeley Peckham Schools.  Afterward, she taught in the Newport school systems from 1943-1953 (Coggeshall and Sheffield Schools). This scholarship is in memory of this remarkable teacher and will be granted to a Middletown High School student who has aspirations to become a teacher.

The following documents must accompany your application to be considered complete: TWO letters of recommendation from a current or former MHS teacher, An official copy of your MHS transcript, A current resume that highlights any athletic, extra-curricular and community service activities, A completed and typed response to the following essay prompt in under interested in being a teacher? The Newport Elks Lodge is offering three Vocational Scholarships to students in the Newport, Middletown, Portsmouth and Tiverton area, who meet the requirements on the Scholarship application. 

·        The William F. and M. Eleanor Alger Memorial Scholarship established by the Newport Elks Lodge in memory of one of its Past Exalted Ruler’s William F. Alger and his wife Eleanor. This $1000 Scholarship is for students planning to pursue a Vocational/Technical program leading to a terminal two-year diploma or technical certificate. Nursing students may also apply.

·        The Joe Cawley, Jr. Memorial Scholarship established in memory of Raymond Joseph “Joe” Cawley, Jr. founder of R. J. Cawley Contracting, Inc. This $1500 Scholarship is available for students who are going into vocational education and trade schools to pursue a Vocational/Technical program leading to a technical certificate. 

·        Additionally in memory of Betty Cawley, RN, the Cawley family has established an additional $1500 Scholarship for students pursuing a career in the medical field or nursing.

• Military Women Across the Nation $1,000 College Scholarship
